Artificial intelligence opens new possibilities for brain cancer care

Artificial intelligence is creating opportunities to improve how brain cancers are diagnosed, treated and monitored. A review published in the European Journal of Cancer examines how these technologies could support more personalised care by bringing together medical imaging, tissue analysis and molecular information.

The article explores applications ranging from identifying tumour boundaries and characterising tumour biology to supporting treatment planning and tracking changes over time. One particularly important challenge is distinguishing tumour progression from treatment-related changes, which can appear similar on medical images but require different clinical decisions.

The review highlights the potential of integrating complementary information into connected clinical workflows. Such approaches could help clinicians interpret complex data and make better-informed decisions throughout a patient’s care.

Significant challenges remain, including limited datasets, variability between hospitals and the difficulty of understanding some AI predictions. Reliable clinical use will require prospective validation, clear standards and close collaboration between clinicians and technology developers.

Co-authored by MOLAB researcher Gabriel F. Calvo, the review examines how AI could become a dependable partner in neuro-oncology.
