MOLAB Outreach Activity – Mathematics against cancer: the rules of cellular chess
IES Airén (Tomelloso)
Monday March 24, 2025

On Monday, March 24, MOLAB researchers will conduct a scientific outreach activity at IES Airén, a secondary school in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real). This session will introduce students to the fundamental role of mathematics in cancer research, highlighting its relevance in modeling tumor progression and therapeutic outcomes. To facilitate comprehension, a simplified cellular automaton model will be presented that can be played using humans on a grid, i.e. the students. That will allow the students to engage in interactive simulations that illustrate key principles of tumor evolution.

Through this initiative MOLAB aims to demonstrate the connection between mathematics and oncology in an accessible way and encourage students' curiosity about scientific research.
