Liquidlike dynamics of optical beams in tailored coherent media

Abstract
We put forward a scheme for tailoring the nonlinear optical response of a four-level coherent media allowing the realization of novel optical materials with competing giant nonlinearities. As an example we study the case of focusing behavior of the optical susceptibility for low light amplitudes and defocusing for larger ones. Numerical simulations performed with the tailored media show evidence of two-dimensional optical solitons displaying liquid-light behavior and spatial steering, which can be obtained at low light powers achievable in the frame of current experiments.
